We had heard about a beautiful free camp at Martins bend just
out of Berri but with our water tank empty and the thought of no shower for 3
days, we decided against it. I couldn’t
believe what a difference about 60km could make. We have now found where all the Murray River
water is going and have obviously entered the agricultural section. It was a constant pattern of orchards and
vineyards for the rest of our journey today.
It certainly broke up the dry barren countryside that we have seen for
the majority of our trip.
Morning sun hitting the cliffs.
Really was something special to wake up to.
It was hard to leave.
First stop was Berri where we stayed for lunch on the
river. We were running low on food so
bought lunch for Sprouts Café which the information centre had
recommended. Talk about delicious
gourmet sandwiches. They hit the spot
nicely. I also bought some local
produce. Nope not fresh fruit as we
would only have to hand that over in 2 days when we cross into NSW. Instead I purchased gourmet wood oven bread,
cinnamon almonds and chocolate dipped dried fruit. The lady informed me that the cinnamon almonds
were very moreish, and I must say I have to agree as I opened them when I
started blogging today and they have nearly all gone (Jason has helped). Yep I am certainly going to need to loosen
the ole notches on the belt now.
The big orange tree. The big orange down the road
had shut down. Obviously no money in "big" things.
The decision was then made that we would go onto Renmark and
stay there for two nights. It was a very
easy drive and the rest of the afternoon consisted of booking in, then finding
out that you can’t fill your van tank up with drinking water here, instead you
do it in town. So back into town we go,
fill her up and then go and setup camp.
Hamish of course spotted the playground and so off we headed while Jason
set up camp for the night.
We also had to restock the food supplies so off to the shops
we went. I did purchase some fish for
dinner tomorrow night in case Jason isn’t successful tomorrow! We also finally managed to buy some very
important items for the van. I am absolutely
disgusted that we didn’t already have them!
Yep we now have some plastic wine glasses in a stylish green
colour! That is all they had and for
only $1 each I wasn’t about to complain.
Classy aren't they?
Kayla then had her bath in what she is now becoming accustomed
to – the laundry tub and Jason and Hamish set off to set some shrimp traps for
the night. We haven’t had much of a
chance to explore Renmark yet, but it looks so beautiful and the gardens along
the river are full of roses and so lush and green looking. Anyway I had better go and get some sleep
before little miss Kayla wakes up. She
hasn’t slept well the last two nights, just moaning and tossing heaps in her
sleep. My guess is we might see some
teeth soon, or more to the point we had better as I need more undisturbed
sleep!
